The story behind Visitor Center Ocean

Published: Jan 20, 2026, 11:00

Norway is closely tied to the ocean, yet there has been no dedicated ocean visitor center. This simple observation became the starting point for the project.

Visitor Center Ocean grew out of a desire to make ocean governance easier to understand. Rules, decisions, and responsibilities shape how the ocean is used every day, but these systems are often difficult to see or grasp.

The project began as an exploration of what such a center could be, and how it might help people better understand the ocean’s role in society.

Finding the right place

An ocean visitor center needs to be rooted in everyday coastal life. Ålesund, and Molovegen in particular, offer a setting where fisheries, industry, and ocean governance are visible and closely connected to the city.

Imagining the center

With the site established and the idea taking shape, the architects began imagining what it might feel like to move through the center. Attention shifted to atmosphere, light, movement, and the relationship between the building and the sea.

A glimpse inside the center

After establishing our vision, we moved toward adding realism through rendering techniques. This short visual walkthrough provides an initial look at the interior environments, atmospheres, and how the spaces of the visitor center could be experienced.

The work on Visitor Center Ocean continues, and both the content and the building will keep developing over time.

Thank you for taking a look behind the scenes and exploring the ideas, sketches, and early visions that helped bring the project to life.
